Her lackey wasn’t interesting, nor was she funny. Her redemption did feel a bit forced though. While she technically wasn’t necessary to the plot, I guess it was interesting to juxtapose her against the leads. She’s a decent foil to the leads, where they had skill without support, she had support without skill. Ken didn’t have much personality, but his scenes were fun to watch.

The dogs were fine but wayy too much hetero stuff going on in this story for me. Shimmer, Glimmer, and Shyne (yes that’s how you spell it) weren’t necessary to the story, but they weren’t annoying and Shyne’s voice was great. Millicent wasn’t much but her character was utilized well and I didn’t dislike her. Her accent was cut and I wish she had more lines. While I wasn’t all that big on her designs, everyone else’s enthusiasm made me feel proud of her and respect her character. 8/10Īlice was adorable and I want to know who hurt this poor girl. Barbie’s personality was much like that of the characters she plays, idealistic and likable, but she definitely feels a bit more grown up in this film than she has in the last few.

Over the course of the film the duo are reminded of their passion when Alice shows them what it was like to be new to art and full of desire to express yourself. While Millicent’s makes a bit more sense, after all, without customers you can’t exactly keep a business open, it mirrors Barbie’s in the sense that she too, was giving up on her passion because she lacked support. To clear her mind she travels to Paris to see her aunt Millicent, who is having a similar struggle. Without it, she felt she must not be as talented as she had thought she was. She had been used to having the support of pretty much everyone around her. After being fired for the first time in her life, she looses confidence in her own ability. It was clever, but I’m not totally sure if I want them to even go in a new direction.īarbie had an arc, which we always like. It was obvious this movie was trying to mark a shift in the style of future Barbie movies. it would have paralleled the other small elements that added to the whole “out with the old, in with the new” vibe they had going. It would have been better to just have Barbie discover Alice’s designs and have those be the ones to save the boutique. I wasn’t a huge fan of all the magic stuff, they acted like France had never seen glitter or sequins before which made their whole influence on the plot seem forced. Her journey to discover that she doesn’t need other’s support to find self-gratification was handled well, and there certainly was a need for this message. The externalities help reflect Barbie’s character growth with a surprising amount of cohesiveness. It was kind of fun to jump between Barbie working to save her Aunt’s boutique and Ken having to deal with every travel problem know to mankind. They did, however change to a worse shade of magenta to dress Barbie in. The technicalities are steadily improving and the movie isn’t bad on the eyes. I attribute this to a combination of 2010 not having great trends, and the animators trying to make Barbie a bit more marketable to a younger demographic. For a movie about fashion, the clothing choices weren’t great.

I’m not totally sure I like it, but I’m willing to give it a chance. Barbie’s eyes seem larger and farther apart. This movie however, feels completely foreign. It still felt like an old barbie movie because of that. Looking back on Mermaid Tale it turns out that movie was the first to implement this new style, but Kelly Sheridan’s voice sort of masked it. If you keep that in mind this movie’s actually pretty good. Initial Thoughts: I have this headcanon (god does anyone even use that word anymore?) that after Barbie proved herself as a director the studio let her make this movie and all the magic stuff was added in to help it fit in with the other movies.
